JOHN EVELYN'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of this treatise on the history of auctions. Originating in the ancient world with the selling of military booty and captives sub hasta -- the spear denoting ownership -- auctions continued to be a common method of sale both publicly and privately, and Rabirius recites its history as well as discussing its application in specific instances in contemporary France.
