STATUETTE EN SERPENTINE
Olmèque (probablement la région du Guerrero), Préclassique moyen, ca. 900-600 avant J.C.
Rappelant la traditionnelle sculpture stylisée sur pierre Guerrero, le jeune prince est montré sous des formes simples qui évoquent un sceptre, debout et tenant fermement ses bras le long du corps. Sa tête est effilée et aplatie à son sommet, ses yeux en creux furent probablement incrustés à l'origine, ses oreilles rectangulaires sont en collerette, sa bouche modelée vers le bas est typiquement olmèque et il porte un couvre-chef bien ajusté en forme de cloche. Pierre grise-noire.

OLMEC SERPENTINE FIGURE,
POSSIBLY GUERRERO REGION, MIDDLE PRECLASSIC, CA. 900-600 B.C.
Reminiscent of the unadorned Guerrero tradition of stone carving. The young lord takes the form of a highly attenuated scepter, standing with arms held closely to the sides, the tapering head flattened at top, sunken eyes, perhaps originally inlaid, rectangular, flange-like ears and downward-curving Olmec mouth, adorned with a close-fitting bell-shaped headdress; in green-black stone.
Unlike the contemplative posture of representations of shamans her the figure incorporates the image of the ruler as scepter.
