(Imperfect: lacking portrait, first blank, D6, E7,2E2-8, 2F1-4, 3A3, 3C2], title to The Goblins torn with slight loss, some staining and soiling.) Contemporary sheep (somewhat worn, rear board detached); early 20th-century blue straight-grained morocco pull-off case. Provenance: Charles Lamb (1775-1834, annotations -- [on his death his library was bequeathed to Edward Moxon, but the books remained with his sister and collaborator Mary Lamb (1764-1847) until her death -- Edward Moxon (retained only 60 books, probably those with Lamb's annotations, sold to:) -- Bartlett & Welford, booksellers in New York, 1848, cat. 48, sold to: -- Woodman -- Harry Bache Smith (owned by him in 1914; cf. CHARLES LAMB'S COPY OF A TEXT NOTED FOR ITS ALLUSIONS TO SHAKESPEARE. Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare has introduced virtually every child to Shakespeare since its first edition in 1807. It has never been out of print. Lamb clearly read Suckling with Shakespeare very much in mind. While numerous of his annotations consists merely of a cross against a particular passage, on two occasions in 'Brennoralt' (pp.32 and 48) he notes specifically a literary echo from Shakespeare in Suckling's words. The present volume typifies Lamb's library, described by his friend Henry Crabb Robinson in 1824 as 'the finest collection of shabby books I ever saw'. Lamb's library was bequeathed to Edward Moxon but in taking possession of it at the death of Mary in 1847, Moxon appears to have weeded out all but 60 volumes containing Lamb's annotations.
