A FINE AND VERY RARE AUBERGINE-GLAZED INCISED 'DRAGON' BOWL
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)

The deep bowl with rounded sides rising to a slightly everted rim, incised to the exterior with a pair of dragons chasing 'flaming pearls' amidst flames and above a border of rolling and cresting waves with rocky-peaks rising at the compass points, the foot further incised with a border of key-fret above a double-line, covered overall in a slightly iridescent rich aubergine glaze, the interior and base white

It is very rare to find bowls of this pattern and glaze with Yongzheng marks; many such examples with Qianlong marks have been published. Compare with two aubergine-glazed bowls from the Hall family collection bearing Yongzheng marks incised with dragons and phoenix, the first slightly larger illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 15, Tokyo, 1983, col. pl. 285; the other much smaller sold Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2 May 2000, lot 530.
