This drawing is related to the series of compositions of Virgil reading the Aeneid or Tu Marcellus Eris made by Ingres between 1812 and 1832, with one more version painted over a print in 1865. The first version of 1812 is at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse (fig. 1, G. Vignes, Desssins d'Ingres, Catalogue raisonné des dessins du musée de Montauban, Paris, 1995, p. 42). A fragmentary replica, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, was painted soon afterwards, while Ingres also executed two compositional drawings respectively in 1815 and 1822 which he gave to his friends Hesse and Marcotte (G. Vignes, op. cit., pp. 44, 46-7). In 1830 he made another drawing, now in the Louvre, which was probably used for a print by Charles-Louis Pradier in 1832 (G. Vignes, op. cit., pp. 50 and 52). Finally in 1865 he produced another composition, now in the La Salle College Art Museum in Philadelphia, painted over Pradier's engraving (G. Vignes, op. cit., p. 56).
The first version was commissioned in Rome by the General Miollis, but was bought back by Ingres in 1835, when the artist asked his pupils to enlarge the composition. The versions only differ only in very minor details.
