IN BED AFTER A SUSPECTED HEART ATTACK. Einstein writes to Hans Albert that he is delighted at the prospect of him coming to work in Berlin, although he will have to rely on others to obtain a post for him; unfortunately he cannot come to visit his son, because he has been diagnosed with a serious heart condition ('enlargement of the heart with raised blood pressure and too low a pulse'), adding that 'it is not yet known whether it will really get better. In any case I will have to spend months lying down. Even this letter is written in bed'. He has favourable news in his efforts to patent a refrigerator: a company is interested, and he is working on three prototypes. In the letter to Mileva he promises to give Hans Albert a piano, though at first only 'an ordinary honkey-tonk' [einen etwas ordinären Klimperkasten], which can be replaced with something finer at a later date. His health is 'better but still not good. I still spend the better part of each day in bed. At least it means I can have a quiet life without the endless commitments and interruptions -- which is very good news for my scientific work'. The letter closes with plans for a shared holiday with his younger son Eduard. (2)
