RUDOLPH VALENTINO
The following four lots are from the Estate of Jean Acker Valentino, first wife of Rudolph Valentino.
When Jean Acker arrived in Hollywood in 1919, she reportedly became involved in relationships with actresses Alla Nazimova and Grace Darmond. After meeting Valentino at a party, the two became friends and when he asked her to marry him after two months of courtship, she accepted. However, rumour has it that, on their wedding night on 6 November, 1919, Jean claimed she had made a mistake in marrying him and ran back to the arms of her female lover, Darmond. The photograph included in this sale as lot 34 would seem to dispute this rumour, being dated December 1919. When the Valentinos divorced two years later, Jean Acker sued for the legal right to call herself Mrs Rudolph Valentino, even after he had married his second wife, Natacha Rambova. Jean Valentino and her companion, Chloe Carter, a Ziegfeld Follie who went by her stage name, Cleo, were life-long friends and lived together until Jean's death in 1978.
