ARMSTRONG, Louis Daniel (1901-1971), Jazz great.
Photograph insctibed and signed ("Best wishes Louis Armstrong"), also signed by ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE "ESQUIRE ALL STARS", including COZY COLE (drums), JACK TEAGARDEN (trombone), EARL "FATHA" HINES (piano), BARNEY BIGARD (clarinet), VELMA MIDDLETON (vocalist) and DALE JONES (bass), photo by Associated Booking Corp. (imprint in lower margin), n.d. [1950s?].
11 x 8½ in., corners with small tape squares. Boldly signed in bright green ink by Armstrong and Cole, in blue ink by the other band members.
"SATCHMO" WITH THE "ESQUIRE ALL STARS." A fine group photograph of Armstrong's white-suited sextet in action (the vocalist, Velma Middleton, is not shown, but has signed). After World War II the big bands that had dominated the swing era had begun to decline, so Armstrong formed a small, integrated ensemble, the Esquire All Stars, which debuted in Los Angeles in fall 1947.
