Edward Sackville-West, 5th Lord Sackville, had his own self-contained apartment at Knole, Kent from 1926 onwards; its decorations by John Banting and Duncan Grant, and several contemporary paintings, afforded a distinct contrast to the style of the innumerable other rooms in the vast house. Grant's decorative board was evidently executed to cover a large arched fireplace. The small rectangle at bottom centre would have been hidden by a modest electric fire (as was the case with other fireplace decorations by Grant). It was probably painted in situ, circa 1926-1927 at a time when Eddy, as he was known, and Grant were having an affair. Grant was arguably the leading painter of the Bloomsbury group and strongly influenced by the work of Henri Matisse. This screen clearly articulated his fascination with with surface decoration in its employment of line, colour, shape and space.
