Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael was the son and pupil of the landscape painter Salomon Jacobsz. van Ruysdael. He must have trained with his father alongside his more famous cousin Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael. Jacob Salomonsz must have worked in his father's studio until he became a member of the guild of Saint Luke when he was 35 years old in 1664. His dependence on his father's work shows clearly in his pictures, for instance in the present composition.
