The Chants de Maldoror, by Isidore Ducasse, the self-styled Comte de Lautréamont, first published in full in 1869, was a crucial text for the Surrealist movement. It was probably through Alfred Jarry that Breton, Soupault and Aragon discovered the work in 1918-19. Skira's edition of 1934 was Dalí's first original book illustration on a large scale. It comprised 44 drypoints (including two vignettes) which were printed as heliogravures. The 1974 edition was reprinted from the original heliogravure plates. Dali then took seven of the plates and added additional drypoint remarques, with the result that the set contains impressions of these plates both before and after the additional work. However one plate (M. & L. 52) was not included in its original state.
