This vivid self-portrait, showing Grant in his late forties, is one of relatively few self-portraits from between the two wars. Most of Grant's drawings and paintings of himself date to c. 1908-10 and from his later years, c. 1950 onwards. It was almost certainly painted in his London studio, 8 Fitzroy Street, where a photograph from the early 1930s (Tate Archive) shows his reflection in a mirror, very like the present work.

We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance with the cataloguing of the three lots by Duncan Grant.
