The wooden three-masted topsail schooner Ellen James was built by D. Williams at Portmadoc, North Wales, in 1904. Owned by J. Jones & Co. and skippered by Captain J. Jones himself, she was registered in Caernarvon at 165 tons gross (137 net) and measured 101 feet in length with a 23 foot beam. She spent her career in the salt fish trade having replaced her predecessor of the same name which had been wrecked in December 1902.
