The present painting is based on Ensor's celebrated Le lampiste of 1880 (T.142), now housed in the Musée d'Art Moderne, Brussels (inv.no.3294). Le lampiste is stylistically linked to a series of large charcoal drawings from the early Eighties. For the purpose of realism, Ensor chose as models local workers and fisherman from the nearby harbour of Ostende, who would pose for him in his studio. The strong geometrical structure of these composition led critics to compare Ensor to Manet and Cézanne.
