The present picture is a copy of Turner's representation of the burial at sea of the painter Sir David Wilkie, R.A. off Gibraltar. He passed away in 1841 on his way back from the Middle East. The colours of the picture capture the sombre mood of the occasion and stand as Turner's tribute to his friend's memory.
