The world of entertainment was a source of inspiration for Isaac
Israels and in the last phase of his life, after returning from Paris
to settle in The Hague, he made a series of works in the popular Scala Theatre, which was located at the Wagenstraat. Here he could sit
undisturbed between the wings and in the dressing rooms and depict the showgirls putting on their attire. The girl depicted in the present lot is almost ready for her performance; she is in her pink show costume
and putting on make-up to complete her look. Israels often didn't
emphasize the glitter and glamour of this world, but chose the other
side of the presumably glamorous lifestyle behind the scenes.
