The present portrait was painted in Spain and dates to circa 1830, following the presentation of medals to Captain Samuel Edward Cook, R.N. by Dom João VI of Portugal. Captain Cook sat for the Sevillian artist José Gutierrez de la Vega and the portrait was later hung at Newton Hall, Northumberland.
