A Suji-kabuto helmet and hanbo mask
Edo period (18th century)
The sixty-two-plate bowl lacquered black and fitted with a five-stage gilt-copper and shakudo tehen-kanamono carved with scrolling vines, the ridges fitted with gilt-copper fukurin and igaki pierced with inoshishi-me, the mabi-sashi fixed to the bowl with sanko-no-byo rivets, the center one shakudo, the original stencilled doe skin still intact on the mabi-sashi and fukigaeshi and each trimmed with copper fukurin carved with vines, shakudo heraldic crests applied to the fukigaeshi, the helmet fitted with a detachable five-lame black-lacquer neck guard laced in blue with orange and white trim, the bottom lame pierced at the corners with inoshishi-me; the hanbo face mask lacquered black and fitted with a four-lame throat guard laced to match the neck guard
The helmet accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu kicho shiryo (Especially important object) no. 1480 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai (Japanese Armor Preservation Society), 2006.11.19
