伍步雲是一位富創意的畫家。在繪畫生涯中,他的風格曾出現數個轉變,早期作品看得出柯洛和林布蘭寫實風格的影響。1950年以前,伍步雲非常注重寫實,風格和林布蘭相近。而後受到英國風景畫家柯洛(Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot)的影響,伍步雲漸漸放棄強烈的明暗對比法和古典的色調,採取較為柔和的色彩層次變化,用色也漸趨明朗, 60年代起伍步雲的畫風有了明顯的改變,從《九龍鯉魚門》(Lot 1403)便可以從勾勒出桅桿頂端及江上的漁船那幾筆黑色的筆觸中看出中國書法對他的影響。運用中國書法般的黑色線條與斷續的筆觸描繪港邊的景色,畫刀和硬毛畫筆創造出來的肌理更進一步豐富了立體感,俯視的角度來自山水畫的空間概念,表現出畫面的寬廣和深度,進而使觀眾有全景的感受。伍步雲筆下的畫中風景十分的獨特,在《鄉村》(Lot 1405)中,他以中國傳統寬廣由空中俯瞰的觀點融合了西方景觀,明顯取自於油畫中的鮮明藍綠色的明亮陰影,恰到好處地平衡了其中橉比節次排列中式的白牆黑瓦。作於1985年的《深秋》(Lot 1404)則是溫柔地將褐色系及橘色系調和在一起,反映出在夕陽照射下那種美麗又帶著溫暖的光線。

Ng Powan was an artist of intense creativity whose stylistic development took several interesting turns during his long career. While his early works focused on the realist styles of Corot and Rembrandt, he gradually abandoned his classical palette and the earlier Rembrandt-like chiaroscuro effects in favor of layering soft colors, while tending toward the use of brighter, more cheerful tones in the later decades. This transition is visible in A Fishing Village (Lot 1403) where a few black lines suggestive of Chinese calligraphy can be distinguished in the tree tops and boats. Creating texture in the ocean and sky with a palette knife and hard-bristled brush, Ng Powan additionally uses compositional elements borrowed from traditional Chinese landscapes to produce an extra sense of breadth and depth and allow viewers to easily take in the whole scene.

Focusing on his brushwork, Ng formulated unique landscapes, using a wide and aerial perspective of Chinese traditions with Western landscape views as seen in ountry Scene (Lot 1405). The bright shades of green and blue though distinctly taken from oil painting, is balanced with the distinctive black tiled roofs and white walled houses of China. Late Autumn (Lot 1404), painted in 1985 shows a gentler palette of browns and orange hues beautifully reflecting the warm rays of the sun at dusk. It is in all of these works that embody the fresh clarity and detached viewpoint of the ancient Chinese literati painters; Ng's brushwork is concise, flexible, and imbued with feeling, and his gorgeous and carefully managed colors evoke warmth and comfort to the viewer.
