Walking through the Mountain

In the upper colophon is written a dedication to Limin, who was Pok Oi Hospital's director Yuen Lai Man in the 50's for three consecutive terms. The establishment of Pok Oi Hospital came about due to the lack of medical facilities in the New Territories, Yuen Long . Founded in 1919, it enabled the less fortunate to receive medical treatment free of charge. After the Second World War, the hospital was in disrepair, and supporters began seeking donations for its refurbishment. An opening ceremony was held in November 1951, with Hong Kong's 22nd Governor Sir Alexander Grantham as special guest. Yuen's friends invited Zhang Daqian to create this piece in celebration of Pok Oi's return to glory. Influenced by old masters and his travels, Zhang's painting is a culmination of his experiences expressed on paper: a mountain scene in fine detail, of pine, mountains and man. The owner will donate 50 of the painting's proceeds to public charities, including the Community Welfare Projects Foundation (www.lcda.hk), as well as China and Hong Kong registered charities. Furthermore, if the proceeds exceed one million, the owner will donate 20 of the excess of one million to Pok Oi Hospital.
