We are grateful to Professor David R. Marshall for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original, regarding it as a fine example from the artist's mid-career.
The composition is closely related to the Capriccio of Roman ruins, signed and dated 1737 (see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del '700, Rome, 1986, p. 357, no. 251) in which the artist has substituted the sarcophagus and the Temple of Antonino and Faustina respectively with the Medici Vase and the Temple of Minerva Medica.
