HE BAILI-THE ZI ZAIXUAN COLLECTION
He Baili (Paklee Ho, born 1945) is a prominent figure of the Lingnan School of Painting. He has loved painting since a very tender age and began studying Lingnan style painting with Wu Yuji, a pupil of Zhao Shao'ang. To maximize He's exposure to authentic calligraphy and painting, his father He Qiyuan always invited collectors and friends for gatherings of art appreciation. This paved the way for He's future collecting endeavors.
He Baili started to build his collection of Chinese painting while practicing the art as an amateur painter. In 1965, he bought from Jigu Zhai his first collectible: Orchid by Pan Tianshou, so as to learn its brushstrokes and spirit through constant observation. In 1966, at the age of 21, He held his debut solo exhibition. He was very honoured to have Zhang Daqian inscribe one of his paintings, which became the cover piece of his exhibition catalogue and the talk of the town. Since then, He changed his painting style to xieyi landscape in ink. His refined taste for ink is reflected through his collection of Qi Baishi's shrimps and crabs (Lot 2674, 2675 and 2676).
He Baili paints and so he collects, for he believes that good paintings impose positive impact on painters and improve the inner qualities of connoisseurs.
Before emigrating to Canada in 1984, He paid visits to friends of the Chinese painting circle, like Li Keran the owner of Shiniu Tang, Tang Yun the renowned painter and collector, Xie Zhiliu, Yang Renkai, Ching Shifa, etc, so as to learn from them. He sets high standards in collecting. For example, Lady with Fan by Zhan Daqian (Lot 2681) is a gem which depicts the charm and sensuality of a beauty in gongbi style. Throughout his artistic career, He Baili keeps on painting at Zi Zaixuan while collecting in China and overseas, such as Sunflowers and Bird (Lot 2678), Waterfall (Lot 2677) by Zhao Shao'ang, Herding under the Willows (Lot 2683) by Li Keran and Morning Mountains (Lot 2679) by Huang Binhong.
