Château Latour--Vintage 1998
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
VINTAGE NOTE: 1998 was characterized by rousing success on the right bank but much less promising conditions on the left bank. A year with considerable rain, the weather dried off and heated up in May, accelerating flowering. The dry weather turned into drought conditions in many areas, although those with clay soils held sufficient moisture to nourish the grapes. Although there was rain at harvest, it began only after the Merlot crop was picked. The Cabernets were brought in during the first week of October.
"Still showing a bit of baby fat, with fresh red and black primary fruit character and toasty oak spice, the Latour has hardly evolved at all, yet hints at great complexity to come on the nose. On the palate the wine is tannic and structured, with a firmly textured, very rich mouthfeel and great length. In spite of this structure, the wine is not reticent, but is starting to show a very expressive side - a Latour for the ages." Charles Curtis M. W., March 2009
