The following thirteen lots originate from the Architectural commission instigated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1950. Following the country's independence in 1947 a new city was planned to be built in the foothills of the Himalayas. The city named Chandigarh was planned as a confident expression of Nehru's dreams for a new India. Le Corbusier was the most notable of three architects who were employed to realise Nehru's dream for a new city of space, light, fresh air and modernity. Le Corbusier's cousin Pierre Jeanneret was employed to design furniture for many of the buildings.
