Between 1920 and 1930, the art world in Japan, which was closely associated with that of Taiwan, returned towards Eastern aesthetic values after much influence from Western art. As Japan was the nearest place to study western art, artists such as Yang Sanlang, Chen Cheng-bo and Liao Chi-Ch'un enrolled in the Kansai Art School and Tokyo Art School, while Chang Wan-chuan first went to the Teikoku Art School (the predecessor of Musashino Art University) and later transferred to the Kawabataga School. In the 1930s, Chang Wan-chuan received awards and honorable mentions in art exhibitions in Taiwan, forming his foundation in the art circle. In 1938, he established Mouve Artists Society, renamed the Taiwan Shaping Art Society in 1941, with Hong Rui-lin, clearly reflecting these artists' emphasis on shapes. Chang Wan-chuan continued to remain active in the art circle and established groups such as "Kigen (a beginning of a new era) Art Society" and "Sunday Artists Society" With more than. 80 active years of painting, Chang Wan-chuan rich and diverse style through the lots featured in our sale.

After retiring from teaching in 1975, Chang Wan-chuan began his one-year-trip to Europe, a dream he had since he was young. Venice (Lot 1140) of 1976 shows how Chang uses watercolour and marker pen to artist depict Venice with a sense of frankness and lightness. Moreover, the sky, not fully filled with colour, echoes the floating sea. Chang Wan-chuan love towards his hometown Danshui is seen in Danshui Scenery (Lot 1140). It not only captures the essence of the town but also shows the artist's control of colours in rendering a vivid and harmonious landscape. Ultramarine and scarlet are applied with splashes of yellow, green and blue thus carrying characteristics of vibrant folk art.
