FIRST EDITION of Shelley's response to the Peterloo affair (the so-called 'Manchester Massacre') of 1819. The text includes a prefatory sketch of Shelley by Leigh Hunt, to whom Shelley had sent the manuscript in 1819 for publication in The Examiner. Hunt withheld it from publication because he 'thought that the public at large had not become sufficiently discerning to do justice to the sincerity and kind-heartedness of the spirit that walked in this flaming robe of verse'. Ashley V, p.89; Granniss/Grolier Shelley 80; Tinker 1905; Wise Shelley, p.71.
