A lacquered-wood accessory box (tebako)
Meiji period (late 19th century), signed Ho Haritsuo, Kansai saku (After Ritsuo, by Kansai) and with cursive monogram (kao)
The rectangular box with rounded corners and fitted lid decorated in polychrome and gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, ceramic and mother-of-pearl inlay with a bouquet of chrysanthemums and an open folding fan with long red, gold and black tassels that continue to the sides of the box, the edges roiro with stylized foliate scroll on each corner, the underside of the lid decorated in gold hiramaki-e with auspicious symbols over manji scroll, all on a roiro ground, the box interior with matching pattern to the top half and a roiro ground interior, the wood exterior with deep grooves and grain lacquered light golden brown; with applied incised-silver handles on each side in the form of folding fans
