Cylindrical, with sloping shoulder and tapering foot, the front painted primarily in shades of blue with the rear view of a man about to wield a staff, the reverse with verticle garlands between blue and ochre stripes and flanked by famiglia gotica stylized flowers, the foot labeled for 'GIERA PICRA SOLVTIVA'

The label is likely for Hiera picra, a purgative made from spices. See R.E.A. Drey, Apothecary Jars, London, 1978, p. 206.

In her catalogue entry, Wendy Watson suggests sources for the image, possibly taken from a print source depicting The Flagellation.

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate N111k43 dated 23 September 2011 from Oxford Authentication, stating that the sample tested was last fired between 400 and 700 years ago.
