The official symbol of the Bahama Islands and the Florida Keys, the Queen Conch is one of the largest living herbivorous gastropods. Conch pearls are non-nacreous but bear the silky porcellaneous lustre of the shell's interior and display a peculiar flamelike effect called 'chatoyancy'. Like conch shells, conch pearls span hues from white, yellow, and beige to lavender and the most-prevalent pinks, ranging from pastel to salmon to magenta. Conch pearls are still among the rarest of recognised gemstones. According to various sources, a conch pearl is found in only one of 10,000-15,000 conchs, and all are natural.
