SANTUS 2003
I have a great job. I travel, I taste wine, I eat great food and better still I have come to know some fantastic personalities through wine.
Every now and then an opportunity presents itself and you just have ask and so I did. Most recently I found myself at a grand property, a private home, that is surrounded by mature, knotted and gnarly vines. It was easy to see that the husbandry of this boutique plot of vines is well cared for. I proceeded to enter the home, greeted by a familiar face - our client - and work my way downstairs to a palatial cellar room.
The cellar contained many vinous treasures, many of which had been selected from the pages of Christie's wine catalogues. But what attracted my eye was a sizable collection of a wine called "Santus." I had to ask.
My host stated it was a blend inspired by his love for great Pomerol. "This wine is aged in 3 to 4 year old French Oak," he affirms. "It comes exclusively from the property you are on now. Merlot dominates with 95 of the blend, the balance is comprised of 4 Cabernet Franc and 1 of Petit Verdot for both color and structure." I inquired a bit more and learned the winemaker is the one and only Bruno d'Alphonso of Curran Wines, Edna Winery and Sanford Winery fame. Bruno is quite the character and favorite of many in the local wine scene.
I had never seen the wine before and I became curious. "It's exclusive...to me," our client asserts. "The Estate owns the entire production and you wouldn't believe how excellent it is. It has never been offered before for sale and if you allow for 12-24 hours of aeration you might be pleasantly surprised." Bono [yes, that Bono] upon tasting the wine said "This is the best wine I've ever had!" my patron declared. Well, my curiosity was piqued "Would you like to sell some of it?," I was asked. I accepted and why not? Christie's pioneered the California Only Auctions early in the last decade and we reveled in introducing such unheralded wineries to our buying public.
We are pleased to offer these two exclusive lots of a very prized vineyard and from a very loving vineyard owner.
