Very little is known about Bartholdt Wiebke and his oeuvre. Born in the Harz region, he is recorded in 1687 in Amsterdam when he married. His signed paintings show such strong similarities with the still-lifes by Willem van Aelst (Delft 1627-1683/4 Amsterdam), that Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD believes Wiebke must have worked in the studio of the, then elderly, Van Aelst.

The few dated works by the artist date from 1679 to 1682 and the strong affinity with the late oeuvre of Van Aelst, indicate that the present compositon must have been painted in the late 1670s or early 1680s.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for endorsing the attribution to Wiebke on the basis of a photograph (written communication, 19 March 2012).
