This is one of a rare group of early 18th Century golf clubs known to exist. All are playclubs and bear this red keel finish, the extremely long shaft, the extended heel lead, thick horn inset and thick scare neck. In some respects it is comparable to, but slightly later than, the Royal Troon clubs and others in the collections of the Royal and Ancient at St Andrews. Royal Musselburgh and the Royal Burgess. A similar club is depicted in the famous portrait of Sir James and Sir Alexander MacDonald by William Mosman in the collections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
