The inscription and scene are taken from the novel, Journey to the West, in which the Monkey King obtains the Golden-banded staff, ruyi jingu bang by travelling to the bottom of the sea to retrieve a huge pillar known as the 'sea settling needle' from Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the Eastern Seas by reducing it in size and striking fear into the creatures of the ocean.
