Fu Laorong (1894-1960), formerly known as Fu Deyong, originated from Foshan in Guangdong Province. A well-known industrialist in Macau and Hong Kong, he was known as the "Gambling King of Macau" in his generation.
Fu grew up in an impoverished background with a penchant for gambling. In 1913, he accompanied his father to Hong Kong as a shipping machinery apprentice and was often seen around gambling stalls.
In 1937, Fu successfully bid for exclusive rights to the gaming franchise and converted the Central Hotel in Macau into a casino. He began his meteoric rise to the top and paved the way for his monopolization of the industry for the next twenty years. His other business ventures included Tak Kee Shipping and Dai Lai Steamship, which further elevated his prominence. In 1960, Fu passed away at age 66. Subsequently his family gradually decamped from Macau and began investing in hotels and real estate in Hong Kong.
