The present lot is painted in the Song dynasty style and the signature reads Sima Kou, this artist is listed in the directory as a Song dynasty artist who specialized in Buddhist, ghost and figure paintings. This painting may represent a Buddhist allegory, depicting a hunter going up a tree to save himself from an angry elephant. Above him, two mice embodying night and day are biting the branch which symbolizes the fragility of life. The man is being attacked by bees at the same time, these latter referring to the evil thinking.
