GANDHARA, 4TH/5TH CENTURY

Whereas the majority of surviving Gandharan material comprises stylized Buddha images, the present head is a rare example of the portrait sculpture developed in the last phase of Gandharan art during the 4th and 5th centuries. Beyond idealism, the work conveys mood, spirit, and individual characteristics following the tradition set by Roman portraiture.
