The first with Jaswan Marwar seated on wooden chair with red cushion, wearing a colorful turban, elaborate necklace of pearls and emeralds and a white angrakha, holding an ornate sword; the second a circular portrait of Thakur Rawant Singh Ji seated against a lush landscape, wearing a turban with his hair and beard finely rendered, holding a sword, hookah pipe and leather purse; the third a double-sided study each with five figures in various dress, hats and footwear, with additional studies of heads and seals

This study of Jaswan Marwar is after a colored portrait of Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Marwar, attributed to Narsingh Chitara. See S.C. Welch, Room for Wonder, 1978, p.148, cat. no. 66. The last quarter of the nineteenth century witnessed the popularization of photography, luring many Indian artists to give up painting. In the transitional period many copied photographs, as is probably the case with the given example.
