A SCOTTISH BASKET-HILTED BACK-SWORD AND A VICTORIAN HIGHLAND OFFICER'S BASKET-HILTED BROADSWORD
THE FIRST LATE 18TH CENTURY, THE SECOND BY J. & B. PEARSE & CO., LONDON, CIRCA 1875
The first with single-edged fullered blade (tip broken off but present), iron hilt comprising guard of flattened bars supporting shields pierced with circles and stylised hearts, the inner-guard with large bridle-loop, large compressed domed pommel, and blackened wooden grip (heavily discoloured throughout); the second with blunt tapering fullered blade etched on each side with scrollwork and on one side with a crowned 'VR' cypher, regulation iron hilt, red-textile-covered leather liner, remains of dark red textile tassel, and original rayskin-covered wire-bound grip, in original plated scabbard with two rings for suspension
Respectively 35in. (88.9cm.) (when repaired) and 32in. (81.3cm.) blades (2)
