A smaller version of this portrait, with slight deviations, was in the Goudstikker collection in circa 1943, as Theodor Rombouts. Both paintings have been attributed in the past to Jacques de Rousseaux as a possible portrait of the artist Pieter de Grebber, as well as a possible selfportrait by a yet to be identified hand.
