A FINELY CARVED HUANGHUALI WAISTED KANG TABLE, KANGZHUO
Property from a Private American Collector

17TH CENTURY

As many kang tables follow similar construction and size, the most distinguishing features are often the carved surfaces. The present table is finely carved with chilong grasping the scrolling tendrils of an unusual stylized ruyi head. A related example of this type, also with chilong confronted on an unusually rendered ruyi head, and claw feet, is illustrated by Grace Wu Bruce in Dreams of Chu Tan Chamber and the Romance with Huanghuali Wood: The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1991, pp. 86-7, no. 30, later sold by Christie's, New York, 20 September 2002, lot 10.
