A light-hearted letter on domestic affairs and the pleasures of friendship. Chopin announces his return from Nohant to Paris with George Sand on 2 November, asking Fontana if he can await them at Sand's house in rue Pigalle, giving a number of domestic instructions regarding Sand's servant Moreau, who has been living at the house with his wife, but is to be moved out before their arrival; also asking that the rooms and especially Sand's pavilion should be aired and heated, and suggesting Fontana seek help from Eugène Pelletan (the politician and littérateur who was very probably Sand's former lover) -- 'he is a decent fellow, and learned ... treat him in a friendly way, and don't be cross, either with me or with him, or with yourself, or with anybody'. He goes on to quote 'my old proverb', that 'it will work somehow or other', adding 'time flies, the world passes, death pursues us and my manuscripts pursue you as well', though Fontana is to concern himself more with the heating of Sand's house than with them. He looks forward to seeing Fontana on his return, when 'your old, bald head shall come together with my mouldy old nose and we will sing together "Niech zyje Krakowskie Przedmiescie! [Long live the Cracow Suburb]" to a tune of Boguslawski with the tenor Krysztofowicz, accompanied by the late Lenz'. A postscript requests that Fontana order him a hat. Correspondance, ed.
