Sir Anthony Dowell joined the Royal Ballet in 1961 and progressed to become its Principal Dancer, the company's most senior rank. He was acknowledged as one of their star dancers throughout the 1970s and early 1980s until his retirement in 1984. Dowell was appointed artistic director of the Royal Ballet in 1986, and held the position until he retired in 2001.
