QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Yellow jades were considered as the rarest among nephrite jades of various tones. The innate value of yellow jades in the eyes of connoisseurs throughout time is best exemplified in the book Zun sheng ba jian, written by the late Ming scholar Gao Lian, where he in the fifth chapter mentions: 'People now cherish white jade and they set little store by yellow jade, which is nothing but a sign of poor judgement.'

Yellow jades in the form of washers are even more unusual as they were usually made in the form of vases or small decorative objects, making the current lot exceptionally rare. A large amount of this precious material would have to be hollowed out, and only the elite and wealthiest class could have afforded it. Compare to a 17th century plain yellow jade coupe of oval shape formerly in the Gerald Godfrey Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 October 1995, lot 819.
