A FINELY CARVED SMALL CINNABAR LACQUER 'BIRD AND FLOWER' BOX AND COVER

MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

The National Palace Museum, Taipei has a sixteenth century box of slightly smaller size, with very similar decoration of a single bird perched on a flowering branch, but without rocks and against a diamond-diaper ground, illustrated in Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors. Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, pl. 42. Compare also a red lacquer circular dish from the Palace Museum, Beijing with two birds perched on camellia branches, illustrated in Zhongguo qiqi quanji, vol. 5, Ming, Beijing, 1995, pl. 58.
