Birds and Flowers by Wang Liben was originally collected by the Muromachi Shogun in Japan in the early 14th century when diplomatic relations were established with the Ming court of China. Through Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1408), Muromachi Shogun acquired a large number of Chinese art, all being recorded in the Dongshan Mimono. Several hundred years later this painting came in the collection of Shozo Kawazaki (1836-1912).
A well-known entrepreneur during the Meiji Period (1868-1911), Baron Shozo Kawazaki acclaimed achievements in commerce and economy as well as fine art collection. In 1890 he set up a private museum - Changchun Studio, to showcase his acquisitions of more than 2000 works of art, including Chinese calligraphy and paintings, porcelain and jade. This pair of paintings was released from the Kawazaki Collection after an exhibition held in 1936
