The present lot is an illustration for Vol. 3 of Circus, June 1950 for the story Fires of Summer, by Jack Lindsay.

During the late 1940s Vaughan was teaching painting and illustration at the Central School of Art. He illustrated several books at this time and contributed drawings to numerous publications. Having been trained as a graphic layout artist, and having shared a house with his friend John Minton, (perhaps the finest book illustrator of his day), Vaughan learnt how to achieve a great deal through comparatively economical means. His eloquent use of pen and ink demonstrates a rare facility in the variety and range of the graphic marks he employs here.
