His first prints were etchings, a printing method he brought with him when he briefly joined the artists' group Bucke in 1906. In return, his fellow Brücke artists introduced him to the ancient medium of the woodcut, a technique which had fallen into decline since the 16th century and which they were keen to revive. A year later Nolde also turned to lithography and over the next twenty years, in a period of intense activity between 1906 to till 1926, he would create over five hundred prints in a variety of media. The collection presented here encompasses the whole range of his printed oeuvre: from his early, densely worked etchings, such as Tischgesellschaft (lot 82) of 1906, to the nervously scratched drypoint Schiffe im Wind (lot 75) of 1907, the roughly hewn woodcut Fischdampfer (lot 77) of 1910 and the fluidly, elegantly drawn lithograph Stehende Frau (lot 86) of 1911. The prints offered here show Nolde in full command of the medium, perfectly matching his means of expression to his subjects, from portraits to seascapes, genre scenes and grotesques. Trained as a woodcarver and without any formal artistic training, he approached printmaking with a spontaneity and freedom of spirit which makes his prints stand out as some of the most original works of the Expressionist movement on the whole.
