A bronze figure of Shiva Nataraja
South India, Vijayanagara period, 16th century
Balanced with one foot on the back of a dwarf and the other raised in front of him, his secondary hands holding the damaru and flame, clad in a short dhoti incised with a stippled pattern and adorned with streaming sashes that splay out to the side, the face with benevolent expression flanked by Ganga and a naga on his shoulders, the matted hair supporting the skull, crescent moon and serpent, all over a double-lotus base and waisted plinth and surrounded by a flaming aureole
