I always wondered why we should not paint a portrait in an abstract form. An abstract
portrait gives the artist liberty to glance beyond the appearance and project the subject in a
symbolic way. There are many untold mysteries within a portrait. Once told, they project a
different world far more interesting than the one apparent to us. The artists who can detach
himself from the appearance will find a unique way of projecting his apprehensions
(Koorosh Shishegaran, 2001).
Koorosh Shishegaran, one of Irans most acclaimed painters, uses lines and
twists in playful and colourful compositions. The fluid movements of the lines
are depicted on a plain background, free of any expressionist impulse. The plain
colours and the sharp contours are reminiscent of Shishegarans fascination by
graphic arts, yet through his work, he creates visual energy and invokes the
inquisitive mind of the viewer.
Always remaining in a flat space away from any sense of perspective, his
paintings struggle between representation and abstraction. In some of his
works, a portrait vaguely emerges through the masses of fluid and entangled
lines and the metamorphosis of an abstract image turns into a recognisable
figure, yet one that lacks any sense of emotion, as if an optical illusion.
While inspired by classical painting and Iranian Modern art, Shishegaran has
created his own painterly style that is truly contemporary.
