The large dragon that curls around the neck is an archaic feature and one associated with court musicians. In Imperial Wardrobe, Gary Dickinson and Linda Wrigglesworth, London, 1990, p167, a later robe dating to circa 1885 with a related dragon design is discussed as having been worn by a member of the Board of State Music.
